‘Free Fortnite’ Cup: Here Are All The Prizes, And How To Earn Them – Forbes

I think this might be the first lawsuit I’ve ever seen that has merchandise attached to it, but this is just sort of how Fortnite rolls. Developer Epic Games is wading into a major legal dispute with Apple over the iPhone manufacturer’s 30% cut of all App Store purchases, and its holding a bit of a party in order, theoretically, to swing public pressure. The “Free Fortnite” cup is this weekend, August 23, inside of Fortnite, where players will compete for some of the most generous prizes the company has given out in the three-year history of the game. Let’s take a look at it.

For starters, the cup will be on August 23, though the exact time is currently unspecified. The event will run for four hours, and during that time you’ll be able to play 12 matches in order to compete for prizes.

The main prize on offer is the “Tart Tycoon” skin, a rotten Apple meant to signify the corruption of a once-revolutionary business in the face of monopolistic greed, a sentence I can hardly believe I’m typing. It’s available to everyone based on a point system: 10 points gets you the skin, and points are awarded based on the following rules:

  • Victory Royale: 10 points
  • Each Elimination: 1 point
  • Each three (3) minutes spent in a match while not eliminated: 1 point

The last bullet means that this prize will be pretty easy to obtain by anyone who just sort of camps around for 2 or so matches and gets 30 minutes of play time.

Next up we’ve got the “Free Fortnite” hat, which features a Llama with the same coloring as the Apple logo. The top scoring players in their respective regions—20,000 total—will get the hat.

The fancier prizes, however, are awarded based on “eating apples” in the game. This is already something you can do, but I’m sort of assuming that Epic will increase the prevalence of these in the game: we’ll find out more tomorrow.

The players that eat the most Apples get some gaming hardware, the idea being that they can use that hardware to play Fortnite after iOS gets left behind in Season 3. Here’s what’s on offer:

  • Alienware Gaming Laptop®
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S7®
  • OnePlus 8®
  • PlayStation 4 Pro®
  • Xbox One X®
  • Nintendo Switch®
  • Razer® Gaming Laptop

There will be 1,200 pieces of hardware in total, awarded to the players that eat the most apples in their respective regions. For a complete breakdown of how many players from each region will get the awards, see the official rules.

And those are the basics. We’ll know more tomorrow once the tournament opens, but until then, we’ll continue to keep an eye on one the strangest public legal fights I’ve ever seen.
