Chadwick Boseman’s Death Will Alter Fortnite, Avengers’ Black Panther Plans – Forbes

After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, who died at 43 after a long, secret struggle with colon cancer this past week, two major video games will need to alter their plans for introducing the character he made famous into their worlds.

One would be Fortnite, which has a Marvel-themed season going on right now, and Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers, which is launching this week. Both games, coincidentally, had/have plans for Black Panther to arrive, but now both will have to figure out the “right” way to introduce the hero. And that almost certainly means not profiting off his appearance at all.

First up is Fortnite, which as of yesterday, planted a “Panther’s Prowl” statue in the south of the map. Some believe this was crafted as a tribute for Boseman, and yet this was actually planned before his death. Past this, there are leaks of upcoming Black Panther superpowers making their way into the game (along with powers from Hulk, Storm, Wolverine, Iron Man and more) and the idea is that there is almost certainly going to be a Black Panther skin sold at some point.

For both of these games, I do not think the correct move is to scrap their Black Panther plans. And yet in Fortnite’s case, I stand by my previous suggestion that if a Black Panther skin is sold, whatever revenue sharing deal Epic has between itself and Marvel, both parties should agree to donate whatever they make from the skin to either a cancer charity or one Boseman previously supported. I don’t see any other way Black Panther should be introduced into the game, as it is impossible to separate out Boseman from the iconic hero.

The Avengers game is in a bit of a different situation. Yesterday, before the airing of their War Table, which focuses on upcoming content for the game, there was a message that revealed they were altering what they were going to show out of respect for Boseman’s passing, with text in front of a giant Black Panther logo.

Rumor has it that Black Panther is the third “mystery post-launch” hero for Avengers with the other two being Kate Bishop and Hawkeye. And that he will arrive with a full-on Wakandan “raid” activity in the coming months. My guess is that he was supposed to be teased yesterday, but they decided not to as that could have been taken the wrong way. It was a good call.

And yet, again, they’re not going to scrap that character or content. The good news is that in Avengers’ case, new heroes and the content they arrive with are free as part of the game’s bid to be a game-as-service with endless free updates. But they do sell cosmetic battle passes for each new character they add for $10, and presumably Black Panther would have one.

In this case, again, the move either seems to be to donate that money to charity like I suggested with Fortnite, or possibly just to give that battle pass away for free, and let the other 2-10 heroes they release in the next year or two have paid passes instead.

In short, there’s just no way that Fortnite or Avengers should be profiting off Black Panther arriving in their games in the coming weeks or months. I know that Chadwick Boseman is not literally T’Challa, but his iconic performance is impossible to extract from the character, and it would come off just so, so poorly if Black Panther was sold as a skin or a battle pass add-on as opposed to being free or a vessel for charity donations. I don’t see another option here for either of these games, and I would hope the developers agree with me.

It will be impossible to play as Black Panther in those games without thinking of Boseman’s incredible work in the role. As always, Wakanda Forever.
