Report: Activision Blizzard ending Overwatch, Call of Duty League’s competitive balance tax, salary cap – Dot Esports

Activision Blizzard is eliminating the competitive balance tax and soft salary cap for its Overwatch League and Call of Duty League, as first reported by the Sports Business Journal and confirmed by Dot Esports.

The decision comes after the opening of a U.S. Department of Justice antitrust division investigation into the Overwatch League’s practices. Dot Esports broke news of that probe in July, with an Activision Blizzard spokesperson confirming that the DOJ had opened an inquiry and that the game developer was complying.

“We have received an inquiry from the Department of Justice and are cooperating accordingly,” an Activision Blizzard Esports spokesperson told Dot Esports at the time. “We deliver epic entertainment to our fans and support our players and teams in producing the most competitive and enjoyable esports leagues in the world.”

The DOJ declined to comment on July 6 and a Freedom of Information Act request for files related to and interview transcripts contained in the investigation by Dot Esports was denied on July 19.

The Civil Conduct Task Force subdivision of the DOJ’s Washington office is looking into the competitive balance tax and soft salary cap, provisions that punish teams in the Overwatch and Call of Duty Leagues that spend in excess of a certain amount on their roster each year. In 2020, the soft salary cap threshold equaled $1.6 million, according to league sources.

Those policies could constitute a violation of the 1890 Sherman Act and precedent set in the 1965 U.S. Supreme Court case Amalgamated Meat Cutters v. Jewel Tea Co., which said “union-employer agreements” are outside of the scope of the Sherman Act.

That exemption is what other pro sports leagues, like the NFL, NBA, and MLB, take advantage of, given their relationships with their player unions. The Overwatch League and Call of Duty League do not have labor unions.

‘Overwatch 2’ team outline changes coming to Brigitte – NME

Members of the Overwatch 2 team have shared some of the details behind Brigitte’s upcoming rework.

Several heroes of Activision Blizzard‘s upcoming Overwatch 2 have received videos showing their new abilities and changes. However, Brigitte hasn’t had the same treatment yet. Developers have provided plenty of details in a Reddit AMA.

The new design ethos for Overwatch 2 is an essential change to the crowd control (CC) effect. The post says, “non-tank CC’s we’ve been taking a hard look at and trying to change them to remove the CC component and buff it in other ways.”

What this means for Brigitte is that her important shield bash is no longer able to stun opponents. This might seem like a drastic change for those who remember Brigitte from the original Overwatch. Her stun was the best way for her to catch out and focus down most heroes. It also allowed her to deny specific enemy abilities.

To compensate for the massive nerf, Brigitte’s shield bash will now push through barriers as it did when it was first implemented in Overwatch. It will also do more damage in the sequel, as there are no more stun combos to worry about.

Brigitte can also travel “almost twice as far” when using the shield bash. This allows for her to dive deeper with her mace bash and escape to safety with greater ease. A reduced cooldown will also be coming, which will allow the shield bash to be used as a traversal tool.

Brigitte has a passive effect called inspire. When she deals damage with her mace, the ability triggers to heal those around her. In Overwatch 2, this ability is also activated when she deals damage with her shield bash. This allows her to poke out and start healing her allies without having to drop her shield.

In other news, new modding tools have arrived for Halo 2 and 3 as part of The Master Chief Collection’s eighth season.

Call Of Duty: Vanguard Receives An Awesome Zombies Trailer – Bleeding Cool News

At this point in time, it wouldn’t be a Call Of Duty game without zombies, and Call Of Duty: Vanguard is no exception as they’ve released a new trailer. Just in time for Halloween and with a soundtrack from Billie Eilish with her song “Bury A Friend”. As you might suspect from the look and feel of this one from the artwork below, we’re getting a bigger story on a much grander scale in the middle of World War II, and it looks like while it appears to be its own stand-alone adventure, this story might slightly cross paths with some previous tales that have happened in the past. Because let’s be real, the world is a big place but the landscape of World War II only went to so many places on this rock and it was bound to make a few references here and there.

Because of course it had to be zombies all along. Courtesy of Activision.
Because of course, it had to be zombies all along. Courtesy of Activision.

The primary focus of this one appears to be focused on another ancient artifact from the Dark Aether Saga, as this time around giving a particular leader within the German army access to occult powers from something referred to as “Der Anfang” as they are able to raise already killed zombies back from the dead. You’ll know them as they come with a particular symbol across their skull. What’s more, it looks like the soldiers themselves are being given some weapons to fight off the resurrected undead as they themselves seem to have relics that do specific things. No matter what, it looks like we’re all going to have a great time in this one dealing with super occult powers involving making sense of sigils and having to stop one man and his apparent demigod from using necromancy to win the war. Enjoy the trailer!

COD Vanguard & Warzone Ricochet anti-cheat revealed with controversial kernel-level PC driver – TheSixthAxis

Activision has revealed the new Ricochet anti-cheat system for Call of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone. It will feature in COD Vanguard at launch on 5th November, and be added to COD Warzone with the Pacific update later this year.

The Ricochet Anti-Cheat system will work on multiple levels to try and stamp out cheaters. This includes server-side monitoring tools, better investigation processes and strengthened account security measures. Most controversial, however, is the PC kernel-level driver, which will be used first with Warzone.

PC kernel-level anti-cheat drivers have been seen previously with competitive games like Valorant, they are particularly controversial due to how deeply they must burrow into the operating system’s inner workings. It could present a new avenue for hackers to gain access to your computer, if the driver has any security flaws, and also encourages cheat creators to dig deeper into the system themselves. Thankfully we haven’t seen any horror stories of this happening… yet.

However, while Valorant’s anti-cheat driver is always active and requires rebooting the system in order to deactivate, Ricochet will only run when you play a game that uses it and will shut down when the game is closed. Activision also state that the driver will only monitor and report on system activity related to Call of Duty.

Ensuring player privacy is extremely important, and the prospect of a kernel-level driver may give some players pause. Given those concerns, here is how your privacy will remain unaffected with RICOCHET Anti-Cheat:

  • RICOCHET Anti-Cheat’s kernel-level driver operates ONLY while playing Call of Duty: Warzone on PC.
  • RICOCHET Anti-Cheat’s driver is not always-on.
  • RICOCHET Anti-Cheat’s driver monitors the software and applications that interact with Call of Duty: Warzone.
  • When you shut down Call of Duty: Warzone, the driver turns off.

(Activision’s emphasis)

Call of Duty beta multiplayer flame guy

Anti-cheat systems are becoming increasingly important for video games as free to play games allow for easier repeat access to video games despite bans for cheating. Additionally, as cross-platform gaming becomes more and more prevalent, it’s more important for developers to secure the PC platform where it’s easier to load up cheat software and gain an unfair advantage over consoles as well as PC (not that it isn’t already bad enough to affect PC gamers). It’s an arms race, especially for the most popular games in the world like Call of Duty, Fortnite and Overwatch.

Activision Announces Ricochet Anti-Cheat System For Call Of Duty – Bleeding Cool News

Activision revealed their new anti-cheat system that will be going into Call Of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone which they’re calling Ricochet. The system was introduced in a new post from the team in which they go over how exactly it will work out. Theoretically, the system will randomly be on checking players across the board no matter where they are in the world, identifying the different programs that interact with the game. If it picks up something like Discord, it’s probably going to ignore you as that’s safe. But if it picks up something like an aimbot, you’re going to get dinged immediately whether or not you used it in the game. We’ll see if the system holds up and does its job, but realistically, we won’t know for certain for at least a few months.

The Ricochet Anti-Cheat initiative is a multi-faceted approach to combat cheating, featuring new server-side tools which monitor analytics to identify cheating, enhanced investigation processes to stamp out cheaters, updates to strengthen account security, and more. Ricochet Anti-Cheat’s backend anti-cheat security features will launch alongside Call Of Duty: Vanguard, and later this year with the Pacific update coming to Call Of Duty: Warzone.

In addition to server enhancements coming with Ricochet Anti-Cheat is the launch of a new PC kernel-level driver, developed internally for the Call Of Duty franchise, and launching first for Call Of Duty: Warzone. This driver will assist in the identification of cheaters, reinforcing and strengthening the overall server security. The kernel-level driver launches alongside the Pacific update for Warzone later this year.

While the kernel driver, which is only a part of Ricochet Anti-Cheat, will release to PC, by extension, console players playing via cross-play against players on PC will also stand to benefit. The kernel-level driver will subsequently release for Call Of Duty: Vanguard at a later date.

Is Overwatch 2 Skipping Loot Boxes? – SegmentNext

As Overwatch 2 gets closer and closer to release, age ratings on the game are starting to pop up in different countries. Most intriguingly, however, is the lack of mention of loot boxes in the German age rating, leaving gamers wondering if Overwatch 2 loot boxes will be present in the game or not.

In the past few years since the original Overwatch game released, the tide has turned against loot boxes and microtransactions, especially in places like Europe that have condemned the practice as harmful to minors and barely distinct from gambling. Some countries have even passed legislation against them.

In Germany, specifically, the government recently amended their Youth Protection Act to limit loot boxes (which it refers to as “cost traps”), and any game that includes them will have its age rating increased, diminishing its audience.

While loot boxes in the original Overwatch game were exclusively cosmetic (only giving players stickers, emblems, and costumes), the temptation to get them was still there. However, the Overwatch 2 loot boxes might not be gone in their entirety.

It’s entirely possible that Activision has made it so that only certain regions will have to use loot boxes in order to attain these sorts of things. Belgium, for instance, successfully passed an anti-microtransaction law, and that didn’t change anything outside of the country for most games that included loot boxes.

Overwatch in Germany is rated 16+, while the game is still rated T in North America. While we don’t know yet exactly what the particulars of Overwatch 2 loot boxes are, it’s likely that Activision-Blizzard will come up with a way for players in countries that don’t allow microtransactions to still have access to the cosmetics normally obtained in the game’s loot boxes.

At any rate, Overwatch 2 still has no publicly announced release date, so if you want more information, all you can do is keep a watchful eye on Blizzard’s social media pages for any new information about the game.

In Mercenaries, players will assemble Parties of six heroes from among their roster and set out to complete single-player Bounties—a randomly generated series of battles which culminate in a bout with powerful Bounty Bosses. Every hero on the team will gain experience after each successful battle, increasing in power and gaining access to new abilities as they level up. Upon completing a full Bounty, players will earn a cache of treasure that includes Mercenary Coins, which they can use to craft additional heroes, or upgrade ones they already own.

The roster of Mercenary heroes—which includes over 50 at launch—was designed to encourage players to get creative when building teams, with countless powerful synergies for players to discover. Players can also bring their most formidable teams to the Fighting Pit, where they can square up against other players and earn experience, achievements, and other rewards.

Mercenaries provides an experience that feels completely new, but embodies the fundamental spirit of Hearthstone,” said Mike Ybarra, co-leader of Blizzard Entertainment. “The team has opened up a whole new chapter for Hearthstone that captures its unique spirit, with a fresh mode full of strategic depth. I can’t wait to see the strategies our players will unleash on the world.”

Players who start their journey will earn their first eight Mercenary heroes just for completing the prologue and introductory missions. Call Of Duty: Vanguard Receives New Story Trailer – Bleeding Cool News

Activision and Sledgehammer Games have released a new story trailer this morning giving a better look at Call Of Duty: Vanguard. While the series has a massive following it’s getting harder and harder to revisit World War II and tell a new story in a real-=world conflict where you already know the outcome. The team has done their best to create one in what appears to be a new take on the classic “group with a secret mission” trope. This one appears to be sending them all around Eurpoe and Africa as there are parts of this that clearly have you fighting in desert while other parts resemble France and Germany. It also looks a lot messier as they appear to be throwing you into some of the harshest weather conditions possible. Enjoy the trailer below as the game will be out on November 5th.

Rise on every front: Dogfight over the Pacific, airdrop over France, defend Stalingrad with a sniper’s precision and blast through advancing forces in North Africa. The Call Of Duty franchise returns with Call Of Duty: Vanguard, developed by Sledgehammer Games, where players will be immersed in visceral WWII combat on an unprecedented global scale.

Through a deeply engaging single player Campaign, a select group of soldiers from different countries rise to meet the world’s gravest threat. Players will also make their mark across Call Of Duty‘s signature Multiplayer experience, plus an exciting new Zombies experience developed by Treyarch.

Call Of Duty: Vanguard will also usher in a new and unparalleled Call Of Duty: Warzone integration post launch, and feature cross-progression and cross-generation play, in addition to a massive calendar of free post-launch content that adds in new Multiplayer maps, modes, seasonal events, community celebrations and more.
